JAKARTA– The Fifth President of the Republic of Indonesia Megawati Soekarnoputri delivered a deep message in commemoration of Kartini Day which falls today, Tuesday (21/4/2026).

The General Chairperson of the PDIP DPP emphasized that women have a historical duty to be a shining light for the nation’s civilization.

He said that every time he commemorated Kartini Day, he always found a message about the vitality of Indonesian women’s struggle to achieve independence. He recalled the history of women’s struggle on June 25, 1933, which he called very visionary.

“Mereka tidak sekadar berjuang bagi emansipasi melalui kesetaraan gender. Lebih jauh dari itu, mereka berjuang bagi pembebasan kaum perempuan dari penindasan politik, ekonomi, dan budaya,” Megawati said.

Megawati emphasized that the spirit of Indonesian women at that time was burning in fighting against the unjust structures caused by capitalism and imperialism.

This struggle also encouraged the founding fathers to formulate Article 27 paragraph (1) of the 1945 Constitution concerning equal status in law and government.

“Kesatupaduan kaum perempuan dan kaum laki-laki sebagai satu kepakan sayap perjuangan itulah yang mendorong lahirnya Pasal 27 ayat (1) UUD 1945. Bahwa segala warga negara bersamaan kedudukannya di dalam hukum dan pemerintahan dengan tidak ada kecualinya,” he said.

Therefore, Megawati invites Indonesian women today to fill the social, political and economic space in order to bring enlightenment to improve the nation’s civilization.

The daughter of proclaimer Bung Karno hopes that women will continue to uphold Bung Karno’s mandate, namely the role of women “Ibu Pengetahuan” and the path of civilization.
