In conjunction with the first implementation of the seasonal management system to reduce green algae, the government will conduct special inspections on open-air livestock manure compost by mid-June.
The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment announced that it would conduct special inspections of major river systems across the country, including the Han River, Nakdong River, and Geum River. The special inspection is to prevent nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus in the compost from flowing into the river with rainwater and causing green algae in the summer if open compost is not properly managed.
The Ministry of Climate Change, the Basin Regional Environmental Office, and local governments are jointly examining 1,497 open composters (405 on public land and 1,092 on private land), as well as open compost left in livestock sheds and agricultural fields adjacent to rivers.
The Ministry of Climate Change expanded the open compost management period from February to November this year. Previously, it was conducted from March to September. The plan is to conduct special inspections in September and October, taking into account double-cropping farms.
