The arrest warrant for Jeon Han-gil (real name Jeon Yu-gwan), a former Korean history lecturer and YouTuber accused of defaming President Lee Jae-myung and New Reform Party leader Lee Jun-seok, was dismissed. The Seoul Southern District Court dismissed the arrest warrant requested by the prosecution, saying, “It is difficult to say that there is a risk of escape or destruction of evidence,” as a result of the substantive examination of the warrant for Mr. Jeon held the afternoon of the previous day. Accordingly, Mr. Jeon, who was waiting in the Yeongdeungpo Police Station detention center, was released around 11 PM on the same day.

Immediately after his release, Mr. Jeon expressed his feelings in a live broadcast on his YouTube channel, saying, “I am grateful to the people and the judiciary for protecting liberal democracy,” and “I realized that judicial justice is alive through the court that dismissed the warrant in accordance with the law and conscience.”

He added, “There is absolutely no reason for him to run away (regarding his charges), and he even returned to the country to be investigated.”

At the same time, Mr. Jeon emphasized, “This is a complaint and accusation to prevent expression and freedom of the press,” and “I never told lies, even in my dreams, and only told the truth.”

On this day, dozens of Jeon’s supporters gathered at the scene and cheered at the news of the warrant being dismissed. While expressing his gratitude to his supporters, Jeon also showed off the unity of the three by revealing that he had received supportive phone calls from conservative figures such as former representative Hwang Kyo-ahn, pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon, and representative Cho Won-jin.

Meanwhile, Mr. Jeon went to the studio immediately after his release and in a broadcast he strongly criticized the Lee Jae-myung administration’s attempt to reorganize the judiciary and security policies, making it clear that he would continue his political activities.
