JAKARTA – PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) (Persero) Operational Area (Daop) 1 Jakarta closed a number of illegal level crossings which were deemed prone to accidents. This step is part of the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) program which is implemented collaboratively with KAI and local governments.

1. Close the crossing

Closing illegal crossings as an effort to control risks on rail lines, especially at points that do not have an adequate security system.

KAI Daop 1 Jakarta Public Relations Manager, Franoto Wibowo, explained that the existence of illegal crossings is one of the vulnerable points in railway operations.

“Illegal crossings are generally not equipped with adequate signs, signals or security systems. This condition is very risky for the safety of train travel and the public. Therefore, closing it is a preventive step that we continue to carry out together with stakeholders,” said Franoto, Wednesday (6/5/2026).

He said that safety is the main priority in every railway operation, so cross-sector synergy is key in reducing potential risks at level crossings.

“We consistently identify vulnerable points and coordinate with the Ministry of Transportation and local governments to close illegal crossings. This is part of our joint commitment to providing safe, secure and reliable train travel,” he said.

Several illegal crossing points that have been closed throughout 2026 include:
• On March 6 2026 at KM 58+5/6 on the Tigaraksa–Cikoya route, Regency area in Banten Province
• On April 29 2026 at KM 42+3/4 on the Parung Panjang–Cilejit route, Regency area in West Java Province
