This Kopassus Intel Infiltrates Enemy Headquarters and Hides the Rebel Leader’s Wife

JAKARTA – One of the TNI’s spearheads in the Aceh conflict was intelligence activities that managed to penetrate the central circle of power of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). Kopassus member Sergeant Badri (pseudonym) disguised himself and entered the enemy’s nest, even though he had to risk his life to crush the separatist group.

“Saya pernah menyamar jadi tukang durian yang mengirim dagangan dari Medan ke Lhokseumawe,” said Sergeant Badri, quoted from the book Koppasus for Indonesia by Iwan Santosa EA Natanegara, Saturday (18/4/2026).

The Sandi Yudha Kopassus member had to pass through security posts and security checks during the trip. When passing by, he was often asked for a share of durian.

“Saya beri dua buah durian justru dimarahi lalu ditempeleng. Katanya, kalau untuk GAM pasti saya memberi banyak. Di sini ada satu peleton anggota yang berjaga, mana cukup kalau cuma dua buah durian,” he said, imitating the officer.

It’s not without reason that Badri disguised himself. With the conflict situation at that time, it was difficult to enter into Acehnese society which was traumatized by the prolonged conflict. So, he disguised himself as an overseas Acehnese fruit seller.

Becoming a fruit farmer gave Badri the freedom to move from Medan, North Sumatra, Lhokseumawe in North Aceh to run his fruit business which brought him into the GAM nest. The process is very long to gain GAM’s trust.
