Recently, as a distorted language culture has spread among students, with swear words and derogatory expressions being used as part of everyday conversation, educational authorities have begun to make improvements.

The Jeonbuk Provincial Office of Education announced on the 19th that it will select and operate 17 teams of the ‘Student Supporters Group for Practicing Warm Language Culture’ in order to establish a culture of healthy language use through student participation activities.

In the educational field, it has been shown that the language used by students of the same age without any particular awareness of the problem is gradually becoming harsher. Representative examples include frequent exchanges of expressions such as ‘Hey, die’ and ‘Get out of here’ between friends as a joke, or using derogatory expressions such as ‘Jjinta’ and ‘Loser’ as nicknames in reference to appearance or grades. It is pointed out that such language not only hurts the person involved but also has the potential to lead to school violence.

In addition, it has been found that mocking or ignoring others has become a trend in online messengers and social networking services (SNS), and the use of this style in real-life conversations is increasing.

Accordingly, the Jeonbuk Office of Education announced on the 18th that it plans to select and support 17 teams of the ‘Warm Language Culture Practice Student Supporters Group’ to normalize the use of positive language and spread a school culture centered on respect and consideration through practical activities in which students actively participate.

The selected supporters consist of five or more students and one instructor, and will operate various programs such as language culture improvement campaigns, self-diagnosis of language habits, school broadcasting and promotions, and cultural and arts-based creative activities.

In particular, we plan to focus on helping students reflect on their own use of language in their daily lives and forming a communication culture that respects each other.

The supporters selected this time are a total of 17 teams, including 6 elementary school teams, 7 middle school teams, and 4 high school teams, and schools from all levels in the province, including Jeonju, Gunsan, Gimje, Namwon, and Buan, participate. The major participating schools include Jeonju Songcheon Elementary School, Saemangeum Elementary School, Irigohyeon Elementary School, Gimje Geomsan Elementary School, Baekun Elementary School, Buan Elementary School, Jeonju Shinheung Middle School, Gunsan Dongsan Middle School, Gunsan Dongwon Middle School, Iri Yeongdeung Middle School, Gimje Middle School, Honam Middle School, Wangshin Girls’ Middle School, Yanghyeon High School, Mangyeong Girls’ High School, Namwon Korean Traditional Music High School, and Korea Technical High School.

Jeonbuk Office of Education plans to support activities through teacher councils and on-site consulting as well as support for operating expenses, and also promote related policies such as ‘Language Culture Improvement Week’ and ‘School Violence Prevention Education Week’.

An official from the Jeonbuk Provincial Office of Education said, “A single word thoughtlessly can damage relationships and increase conflict,” and added, “We will create a school culture of respect and consideration through student-led practical activities.”
