For the first time in 40 years since its premiere, K Ballet’s masterpiece ‘Simcheong’ will bring a professional actor to the stage as ‘Sim Bongsa’. The main character is actor Kim Myung-soo, who has 37 years of acting experience.
Universal Ballet announced on the 17th that Kim Myung-soo will appear in the 40th anniversary performance of ‘Simcheong’ to be held at the Seoul Arts Center Opera Theater from May 1 to 3. Kim Myeong-soo is an actor who started out in theater in 1986 and debuted as a talent in MBC’s 19th open recruitment in 1989, and has since crossed the stage, cathode ray tube, and screen. Recently, he received favorable reviews for his role as Frank in the play ‘Taming Rita’. It is known that after watching ‘Simcheong’ in 2023, Kim Myung-soo deeply sympathized with Sim Bong-sa’s fatherly love and human agony and expressed his willingness to appear on stage. He will appear on May 2nd at 2pm and May 3rd at 7pm.
Kim Myung-soo said, “Watching ‘Simcheong’ in 2023, I have been thinking about how great it would be if I could one day portray Sim Bongsa’s tears and joy on that stage. The ballet stage, where emotions must be conveyed only through gestures and facial expressions, is a great challenge and excitement, and this time, it is a precious opportunity to grow as an actor in that I have to convey the emotions that I have expressed through lines for 37 years with my whole body.”
Veteran Shim Bong-sa will also appear on stage. Seo Seo-beom, a former member of the Universal Ballet Company and a professor in the Department of Film at Seoul National University of the Arts, who is known as the ‘quintessential Sim Bongsa’, will also be on stage again following the 30th anniversary performance. Kim Hyun-woo, a former Universal Ballet company representative and CEO of Balletjoa Dance Academy, will also participate as a guest character artist.
The role of Simcheong will be shared by principal dancers Kang Mi-seon, Hong Hyang-gi, and next-generation newcomer Lee Yu-rim. Kang Min-woo, who returned from injury, and legendary principal dancer Eom Jae-yong, instructor, make a special appearance as the king.
Director Moon Hoon-sook said, “The core of ‘Simcheong’ lies in a drama that touches the hearts of the audience beyond artistic skills. The addition of actor Kim Myung-soo will maximize the dramatic elements of ballet, and this casting is a meaningful attempt that goes beyond simple topicality and shows the infinite possibilities of expression that ballet has.”
