Noh Gwan-gyu declares candidacy for Suncheon mayor: “Changes over the past four years will be completed without interruption” [June 3’s Choice]

Noh Gwan-gyu, mayor of Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, officially declared his candidacy for the 9th popularly elected mayoral election in Suncheon, saying, “I will complete the dramatic changes in Suncheon that have been made over the past four years without stopping.”

In his declaration of candidacy on the 6th, Mayor Noh said, “I have followed the citizens’ strict orders to work only for the future of Suncheon and have run with the spirit of grinding my soul.” He added, “With proven execution ability and strong leadership, I will make Suncheon a leap forward as a clear central city in the eastern part of Jeollanam-do.”

Mayor Noh placed the highest priority on the performance of the 8th popularly elected city administration. He mentioned the record-breaking success of the 2023 Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo and spatial innovation centered on Dongcheon, and said, “Suncheon has now been transformed into a world-class garden city representing Korea and a futuristic city where people want to stay.”

In particular, they emphasized the resolution of the incinerator issue, which was a long-standing issue, the decision to open a Costco store, and the performance of attracting major companies such as Hanwha Aerospace and POSCO Lithium Solution. Mayor Noh highlighted his unique ability to break through, saying, “Even though obvious opposition was expected, I did not avoid what I had to do as mayor without considering political advantages or disadvantages.”

Mayor Roh, who chose to run as an independent candidate in this election, put ‘practical administration’ at the forefront. He emphasized, “We were able to persuade the central government more strongly by taking advantage of our strengths as independents,” and “the proof of this is that we raised the budget of Suncheon City to the highest in Jeollanam-do in about a year after the launch of the Lee Jae-myung administration.”

He then raised his voice, saying, “We have already experienced that a mayor who is influenced by unfair external political forces cannot do anything,” and added, “We will not be tied to political interests and will work only for the benefit of Suncheon.”

The vision for the next four years presented a fundamental transformation of the industrial structure. Mayor Noh expressed his ambition to take responsibility for Suncheon’s food by completing the ‘5 major economic axes’ including △green bio industry, △cultural content industry, △aerospace and defense industry, △healing industry, and △RE100 semiconductor national industrial complex.

Regarding the rapidly changing external environment, such as the recently discussed administrative integration of Jeonnam and Gwangju, he said, “This is a time when prepared, proven and stable leadership is desperately needed,” and emphasized, “We need a mayor who is good at proving results instead of opposition for the sake of opposition or empty slogans.”

Lastly, Mayor Noh appealed for support, saying, “The ending is more important than the beginning, and I have the responsibility to protect the foundation of Suncheon that has been built with great effort,” and “I believe in the wise choice of the citizens of Suncheon, the No. 1 political district in the Honam region.”
