JAKARTA – BMKG revealed that Indonesia and four other countries, namely Thailand, India, Myanmar and Malaysia, are monitoring Monsoon storms in the Bay of Bengal. So, what is the impact on the weather in Indonesia?
“BMKG is currently monitoring the dynamics of the Monsoon in the Asian region, including the low pressure system in the Bay of Bengal. The most real impact has the potential to be felt in the western and northern regions of Aceh in the form of heavy rain, strong winds and high waves,” said BMKG Main Secretary Guswanto, to Okezone, Sunday (17/5/2026).
Apart from Indonesia, said Guswanto, Thailand, India, Myanmar and Malaysia have also issued early warnings regarding a low pressure system that is developing into a Monsoon storm in the Bay of Bengal.
He explained that the main impact of the presence of the Monsoon in the Bay of Bengal is extreme rainfall, strong winds of 25-45 km/hour, sea waves of 2.5 to 4 meters, as well as the potential for flash floods and landslides.
“The areas directly affected are the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, southern Myanmar, south-central Thailand and the west coast of Aceh,” he said.
Guswanto said that most other parts of Indonesia were more influenced by the Australian Monsoon and tropical atmospheric phenomena.
“Currently, the Australian Monsoon is strengthening, bringing dry air masses so that several areas are starting to enter the transition to the dry season. However, tropical phenomena such as the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), Kelvin Waves and Rossby are still active and can trigger local rain,” explained Guswanto.
