JAKARTA — The number of slum RWs in Jakarta has recorded a sharp decline. Until May 2026, the figure has decreased by 52.58 percent, from 445 RWs in 2017 to 211 RWs based on the latest data from the Central Statistics Agency, although slum areas are still often found in the West Jakarta and North Jakarta areas.
According to Member of Commission D DPRD DKI Jakarta, Nabilah Aboebakar Alhabsyi, the decline in numbers should not make the government stop at administrative success alone. Although he still appreciates the decrease in the number of slum RWs in Jakarta.
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is expected to strengthen synergy between the government, community and various other parties. So that regional planning will be more participatory and sustainable in line with Jakarta’s transformation into a global city.
“Reducing the number of slum RWs is certainly positive progress, but the real work is ensuring that the quality of life of the community really changes and is sustainable,” said Nabilah in her statement, Monday (18/5/2026).
The PKS legislator believes that regional planning cannot only rely on a one-way or top down approach from the government. According to him, ongoing collaboration is needed by involving the community through a Community Action Planning approach from the early planning stages.
Citizen involvement is very important so that the program does not stop at physical development, but also fosters a sense of ownership of the environment that has been improved.
“If the community is involved from the start, their sense of ownership will grow. Facilities that have been built can be looked after and maintained independently by the residents,” he said.
